Taproot Explained: Schnorr, Script Trees, and How Bitcoin Upgrades Activate

Taproot was Bitcoin’s biggest upgrade since SegWit, and it activated without a fight. Here is what it changed and how Speedy Trial worked.

What Taproot is

Taproot is the name for a set of three Bitcoin improvement proposals that activated together in November 2021: BIP 340, BIP 341, and BIP 342. The design was first proposed by developer Gregory Maxwell in January 2018. It was Bitcoin’s most significant upgrade since SegWit in 2017, and unlike SegWit, it activated without a public fight.

Its three components:

Schnorr signatures (BIP 340). A new signature scheme replacing ECDSA for Taproot outputs. Schnorr signatures are provably secure under standard assumptions, support efficient batch verification, and, critically, can be aggregated: several signers can produce one combined signature.

Taproot (BIP 341). A new output type combining a public key with an optional tree of alternative spending scripts. Most spends use the simple key path and reveal nothing else. If the key path is unavailable, a script path can be used, revealing only the one script branch actually executed and hiding the rest.

Tapscript (BIP 342). The updated scripting rules for Taproot spends, which among other things enable Schnorr-based signatures inside scripts and leave room for future script upgrades.

Why it matters

Privacy. A single-signature wallet, a multisig vault, and a Lightning channel close can all produce spends that look alike on-chain, because the cooperative key path reveals nothing about the other conditions that existed. Observers learn less, and complex setups stop standing out.

Efficiency and cost. Key path spends are small and cheap. Aggregation means a multisig arrangement no longer needs to publish every public key and signature, which reduces both fees and the amount of data stored on-chain.

Better building blocks. Lightning channels, vaults, and more advanced contracts are simpler and cheaper to build on Taproot outputs. Much of the visible adoption since 2021, including the wave of inscription activity in 2023 that relied on Taproot-era witness data, traces back to this upgrade.

How it activated: Speedy Trial

Taproot is also the reference case for how Bitcoin upgrades now activate, a process refined by the upgrade-activation debates of 2017.

Earlier soft forks used BIP 9 versionbits signalling, where miners signal readiness over a series of difficulty periods. After the long SegWit standoff, which was only resolved with the help of a threatened user-activated soft fork, the community wanted an activation path for Taproot that was fast, measurable, and did not hand any single group a veto it could sit on indefinitely.

The chosen method, Speedy Trial, worked like this. Miners signalled support in the block version field during a three-month window in 2021. If at least 90 percent of blocks in any single difficulty period signalled, the upgrade would lock in and activate at a fixed later height. Signalling crossed the threshold in the first period in June 2021, Taproot locked in, and it activated at block 709,632 on 14 November 2021.

If Speedy Trial had failed, the fallback discussion involved lot=true style proposals, where nodes themselves would enforce activation after a deadline. It never came to that, and the episode is now cited as evidence that miner signalling works when the underlying change has genuine consensus behind it.

The general lesson on activation

Bitcoin has no formal government and no upgrade button. A soft fork activates when developers write the rules, miners signal and enforce them, and the economically relevant nodes adopt software that treats non-compliant blocks as invalid. Taproot’s smooth path, from a 2018 mailing list proposal to activation in under four years, is the template current proposals try to follow.

Key facts: Proposals: BIP 340 (Schnorr), BIP 341 (Taproot), BIP 342 (Tapscript). Proposed: January 2018, by Gregory Maxwell. Activation method: Speedy Trial, 90 percent miner signalling threshold. Locked in: June 2021. Activated: block 709,632, 14 November 2021.
