The Balkans Remember Broken Money. BTC Balkans 2026 Is Building the Alternative.

The Balkans Remember Broken Money. BTC Balkans 2026 Is Building the Alternative.

Some regions learn about sound money from books. The Balkans learned it from experience.

In the early 1990s, the Yugoslav dinar collapsed in one of the worst hyperinflations in recorded history, with monthly inflation peaking at roughly 313 million percent. Bulgaria went through its own currency and banking crisis a few years later. A generation watched savings evaporate, and learned to trust anything except the local currency.

That memory is the backdrop for BTC Balkans 2026, the second edition of the Balkan Bitcoin conference, which returns to the Inter Expo Center in Sofia, Bulgaria, on October 31 and November 1, 2026. The event is organized by Bitcoin Club Bulgaria, and it is Bitcoin-only.

A conference built for a region, not a market

BTC Balkans is not a trading event. Its program is built around Bitcoin as technology, money, and a path to financial independence, and it aims to connect the Bitcoin communities of Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Turkey, and beyond.

The 2026 edition runs across three spaces. Hall 1, named Satoshi Nakamoto, and Hall 2, The Balkans, host the main stages. Hall 3 is a dedicated beginners’ room, Bitcoin for Beginners, with educational sessions and hands-on workshops. The Orange Zone adds exhibition booths, drinks, music, and games, and a Kids’ Corner, called Little Satoshi, makes the conference workable for parents.

Announced speakers include Kyle Huber of the We Are Satoshi podcast, Arvin Kamberi of the Serbian Bitcoin community, Boris Mirchev of Digital Assist, Plamen Andonov, Georgi Manolov, Dr. Peter Schmidt, Marin Pavlic, and Federico Rivi, alongside representatives of Balkan Bitcoin communities.

Why the Balkans, why Bitcoin

The case for Bitcoin in the Balkans is structural, not speculative.

First, the monetary history. When a region has lived through hyperinflation and banking collapse within living memory, a currency that no government can print carries a different weight. Bitcoin is not an abstraction there. It is a hedge against a failure mode people have personally survived.

Second, remittances. Money sent home by the diaspora is a pillar of the regional economy, reaching roughly 17% of GDP in Kosovo and around 10% in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, according to World Bank data. Traditional corridors charge high fees and settle slowly. Bitcoin and Lightning rails can move the same money faster and cheaper, leaving more of it with the families it was earned for.

Third, position. The Balkans sit between regulatory blocs: EU member states bound by MiCA on one side, non-EU states with more flexible frameworks on the other. That in-between position makes the region a natural testing ground for Bitcoin payment infrastructure that does not depend on any single monetary system.

Panels at BTC Balkans 2026 take these themes head on, with sessions on DAC8 and privacy, the Balkan Bitcoin industry, education, and self-custody.

Tickets and partners

Single-day tickets cost EUR 62, two-day tickets EUR 92, and VIP tickets EUR 305, and paying in Bitcoin takes exactly 10% off every tier. Lightning News readers get a further 15% off with the code bitcoinclub. Current prices rise from October 22, so the code is worth most this week.

We are also giving away 3 tickets to the conference on X:

Tickets are sold through btcbalkans.com and bilet.bg. Event partners include Satlantis and Bull Bitcoin.

The first BTC Balkans ran in 2025. The 2026 edition is bigger in scope, and its premise is simple: the region that remembers broken money best may be the region that adopts the alternative fastest.

These dynamics are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The incentives were there long before the conference. BTC Balkans just gives them a stage, two of them, in Sofia this fall.
