OpenSats Awards Twelfth Wave of Grants

OpenSats, a leading non-profit dedicated to funding open-source bitcoin development, today announced its twelfth wave of grants from the General Fund.

OpenSats, a leading non-profit dedicated to funding open-source bitcoin development, today announced its twelfth wave of grants from the General Fund.

This significant investment supports twelve innovative projects – including five first-time grantees and seven renewals – all focused on strengthening bitcoin’s core pillars: decentralization, transparency, usability, and censorship resistance.

The selected projects address critical gaps across the ecosystem, from enabling anonymous mining payouts and building Lightning nodes for .NET/Swift ecosystems to creating self-hosted analytics tooling and next-generation mobile ecash wallets. This wave brings OpenSats’ total grant count to over 300 since the program’s inception, demonstrating unprecedented support for bitcoin’s foundational builders.

OpenSats Breaking Barriers: Spotlight on First-Time Grantees

  1. Sovran (iOS): Open-source ecash/Lightning wallet enhancing Cashu usability with NFC payments, multi-mint support, and eSIM/VPN integration. Grant funds: Android development, unified payment addresses, and balance management tools.
    Repo: SovranBitcoin/Sovran
  2. NLightning (.NET): Production-grade Lightning node implementing core BOLTs for enterprise and open-source .NET developers. Grant funds: BOLT 4/5/7 completion, channel operations, and fuzz testing.
    Repo: ipms-io/nlightning
  3. Swift Bitcoin (Swift): Full node SDK with PSBT/miniscript support – now syncing on testnet. Grant funds: Testnet4 validation, P2P messaging, and cross-platform stabilization.
    Repo: swift-bitcoin/swift-bitcoin
  4. Bitcoin Research Kit (Rust): Self-hostable analytics powerhouse combining Glassnode, mempool.space, and electrs functionality. Grant funds: Full block/address explorer, Electrum protocol support, and Prometheus monitoring.
    Repo: bitcoinresearchkit/brk
  5. Hashpool & Axepool: Revolutionizing mining with anonymous, accountless ecash payouts (Hashpool) and simplified small-scale miner proxies (Axepool). Grant funds: NUT-04 compliance, Bitaxe integration, and Proof of Liabilities protocol.
    Repo: vnprc/hashpool

Sustaining Impact: Key Renewals

Critical ongoing projects receiving renewed backing include:

The Bigger Picture

This wave strategically targets four growth vectors:

  1. Privacy-Preserving Mining (Hashpool/Axepool)
  2. Platform Expansion (.NET/Swift node tooling)
  3. Self-Hosted Analytics (Bitcoin Research Kit)
  4. Consumer Ecash Adoption (Sovran)

With 1.4 billion unbanked adults globally, these projects dismantle technical barriers that exclude vulnerable populations from bitcoin’s benefits.

Call to Builders & Donors
