Felipe Servin: “Build for humans, not headlines”

When Felipe Servin watched millions in emerging markets trapped between hyperlocal WhatsApp trust and broken financial rails – juggling black-market rates and collapsing currencies – a nuclear idea took shape: What if sending bitcoin flowed like a chat? No new apps. No seed phrases. Just frictionless value woven into the world’s 2.5-billion-user messaging fabric.

Out of that rage against complexity, Sati was born: a Lightning-powered Trojan horse turning WhatsApp into a global bitcoin switchboard – where Venezuelan freelancers get paid, Nigerian savers escape inflation, and remittances fly at chat speed.

The Sati Origin Story

  • Lightning Strike Moment: What real-world friction or “aha!” moment sparked the idea for Sati? Was it a personal pain point or a gap you saw in bitcoin’s usability?

Sati was born from frustration. I saw people in emerging markets using WhatsApp to talk about dollars and bitcoin, but still relying on black market rates, cash, or clunky exchanges. That disconnect, between how we communicate and how we move money, was the spark. I thought: What if sending bitcoin was as easy as sending a message?

  • Why WhatsApp?: Messaging apps are ubiquitous but not built for bitcoin. How did you convince yourself (and your team) that this was the Trojan horse for bitcoin adoption?

WhatsApp is the internet for billions. It’s where trust already lives, among family chats, remittance convos, and daily business. Instead of asking users to download a new app, we brought bitcoin to where they already are. It wasn’t about convincing ourselves, it was about respecting the reality of how people actually live.

  • From 50M FB/IG to bitcoin: Your background scaling social media audiences is legendary. How did that experience shape Sati’s user-centric design and growth strategy?

When I started my career in San Francisco a decade ago, my first startup scaled to 50 million users by building massive organic communities through data and early AI, pre-ChatGPT. We learned that communities thrive on connection and density of interest, it’s all about time and engagement.

That same principle applies to bitcoin. At Sati, we design for flow, not features. Everything is stripped down to reduce friction and feel familiar. The playbook is the same: move fast, build trust, and make people feel like they belong. Sati isn’t just a wallet, it’s a network with purpose.

Magic Behind the Scenes

  • Simplicity vs. Security: Sati makes sending bitcoin feel like texting. But under the hood, how do you balance ease-of-use with ironclad security (especially with Lightning Network integration)?

Sati feels like texting, but it’s built like a vault. We use encrypted user sessions, and biometric authentication via WhatsApp when possible. Our backend handles the Lightning complexity, channel management, liquidity routing, so users don’t have to. It’s invisible security.

  • Xverse Partnership: Why choose Xverse as a core wallet partner? What makes this synergy tick, and are more wallet integrations coming?

We chose Xverse because they deeply understand UX and share our bitcoin-first ethos. With over 1.5 million users, they’ve become the leading gateway for the new wave of bitcoin adoption, especially in the world of Ordinals. This partnership gave Sati an immediate distribution boost, allowing us to plug Lightning into an already thriving ecosystem.

But this is just the beginning. We’re actively building out more distribution partnerships to increase our reach and accelerate monetization. We’re seeing strong signals from innovative apps and wallets with degen audiences that want to bring in fast bitcoin to unlock “money velocity” and entirely new use cases around micro-payments, rewards, and programmable finance.

One exciting upcoming integration is with Parasite Protocol, a bitcoin mining pool designed for home miners. Sati powers the Lightning payouts there, enabling us to deliver as little as 10 sats in under 2 seconds to thousands of miners across the globe. This is what Lightning was made for.

  • Scaling Challenges: When users blast transactions via WhatsApp, how does Sati handle network congestion or Lightning’s liquidity limits? Give us a sneak peek into your architecture.

We’ve architected Sati to decouple the WhatsApp interface from the core engine. When transactions spike, our queuing system ensures delivery and retry logic. On Lightning, we partner with multiple node providers, maintain liquidity buffers, and use automated rebalancing. The goal: the user never feels the congestion.

Disrupting Payments & Adoption

  • Target User: Who’s the perfect Sati user? Is it the Venezuelan freelancer paid in BTC, a remittance-sender, or a newbie testing the waters?

Sati is built for the unbanked, the underbanked, and the overcharged. That’s the Venezuelan designer paid in BTC. The Nigerian who wants to save in something better than their currency. The Mexican sending dollars home. If WhatsApp is your bank, Sati is your upgrade.

We’ve learned to design with compliance in mind, even when regulations are unclear. We educate, not speculate. We’ve had some close calls, especially with local banks, but transparency and a user-first model keep us on the right side. We partner with local legal advisors in each country we launch.

  • Beyond WhatsApp: Sati’s vision is “send/receive fast bitcoin anywhere.” Are Telegram, Signal, or email integrations on the roadmap?

Absolutely. Our vision is to make bitcoin flow as easily as a message, and that means Sati will show up anywhere people communicate. Telegram, Signal, SMS, bots, even email, if there’s a message thread, we see a channel for bitcoin.

We’re already exploring ways to bring Lightning-native interactions to social platforms, think tipping, rewarding, or replying with sats, turning everyday messages into instant value transfers. We believe the future of bitcoin adoption is social, driven by conversation, micro-incentives, and fast, expressive money.

We’re also experimenting with other Bitcoin Layer 2 solutions to complement Lightning where it makes sense. Whether it’s zapping a post, splitting a bill in a group chat, or triggering a mining payout via message, we want Sati to be the invisible infrastructure behind fast bitcoin, everywhere it needs to be.

Founder’s Journey: Grit & Vision

  • Biggest Pivot: Share a “back against the wall” moment that Sati and How did you pivot?

Early on, we thought we had to build a full neobank. It was too heavy. Too regulated. Too far from what users really needed. We scrapped that and focused 100% on what we do best, moving Bitcoin fast and simple. That pivot saved us.

  • Bitcoin Maximalism?: Why build exclusively on “Bitcoin + Lightning” vs. multi-chain? Does Ethereum, Solana, or stablecoins tempt you?

We’re bitcoin-first, but not blind maximalists. Stablecoins matter, especially in inflationary economies. But multi-chain chaos dilutes focus. Bitcoin + Lightning is the most battle-tested path for global money. Stablecoins are here to stay and we cannot fight that trend, so we adapt. That’s where we build.

  • Killer Feature: What’s the #1 thing on Sati’s roadmap that’ll make users scream “HOW did I live without this?!”

Soon, you’ll be able to reply to any message in WhatsApp with “$” and instantly send Bitcoin, no app, no address, no friction. It’ll feel like Venmo had a child with Nostr zaps, but on the world’s biggest messaging network. People will say: “Why wasn’t it always like this?”

Closing Wisdom

  • Bitcoin’s Next Frontier: Where does Sati fit into the future of Bitcoin, Layer 2s, DeFi, AI?

Sati is building the human layer of bitcoin, the part that makes powerful tech feel natural, accessible, and invisible.

We see a future where bitcoin is the financial backbone, but enhanced by other key layers: stablecoins for local pricing and savings, AI for personalized support and seamless multi-language UX, and DeFi simplified down to intuitive concepts like “earn while you save,” without any of the financial jargon.

We’re not chasing trends, we’re translating them. Our goal is to take the complexity of bitcoin, Lightning, AI, and DeFi and wrap it in the simplest interface: a message. If bitcoin is the engine, Sati is the steering wheel.

  • To Aspiring Builders: What’s your mantra for entrepreneurs entering the chaotic, beautiful world of bitcoin?

My mantra? “Build for humans, not headlines.” bitcoin doesn’t need more ideology, it needs products that work. Solve a problem people wake up thinking about. Start there.

  • Mission Support: How can the global bitcoin community support your mission?

If you believe bitcoin is for the billions, help us get it there. Try Sati and our new products. Give feedback. Stack sats with us. Build bridges. Or just send sats to someone you love on WhatsApp, and show them what freedom feels like.
