Replit AI Agent Purchases Domain Using Bitcoin over Lightning

Fusats, the startup redefining payments for AI systems, has demonstrated a groundbreaking use case at the Coinbase Hackathon: enabling an AI agent to autonomously purchase a web domain, pay for it via Bitcoin Lightning, and prepare to deploy content—all without human intervention.

AI Meets Real-World Commerce

In a 24-hour sprint, Fusats’ co-founder Jordi showcased how AI agents can leverage the company’s payment toolkit to execute complex tasks. The demo involved three key players:

  1. Shedlock Domains: A service for purchasing web domains.
  2. Replit’s AI Agent: A code-writing AI designed for app deployment, repurposed to handle domain procurement.
  3. Fusats: The payment bridge, enabling the AI to authenticate, negotiate, and pay for services.

How It Worked: Code, APIs, and Autonomy

The Replit agent—untrained for e-commerce—was instructed to buy notahuman.me. Fusats fed it API documentation for Shedlock Domains, prompting the AI to:

  • Write Custom Code: The agent generated Python scripts to query domain availability, fetch pricing ($4.89/year), and initiate a purchase.
  • Handle Secure Authentication: When the script required a Shedlock API key, Fusats provided temporary access via its dashboard, bypassing hard-coded credential risks.
  • Process Payment: A Lightning Network invoice appeared. Fusats then equipped the agent with its payment API, allowing the AI to execute the $4.89 transaction instantly.

No Checkouts, No Humans: Why It Matters

“This wasn’t just about buying a domain,” explains Jordi. “We proved that AI agents can autonomously navigate real-world systems—if you give them the right tools.” Key breakthroughs:

  • Dynamic Integration: The Replit agent adapted to unfamiliar APIs (Shedlock, Fusats) by writing code on-the-fly.
  • Secure Delegation: Fusats’ toolkit allowed temporary, auditable API key sharing, critical for scaling AI-agent trust.
  • Multi-Payment Rails: While the demo used Lightning, Fusats supports credit cards, USDC, and more, showcasing flexibility.

From Domains to Decentralized Infrastructure

The next phase? Letting AI agents modify DNS records to deploy websites or apps post-purchase. Fusats envisions a world where AI can:

  • Rent cloud servers.
  • Pay for API credits (e.g., GPT-4, AWS).
  • Negotiate services in real-time markets.

Fusats is now inviting developers to experiment with its beta toolkit at fusats.com/docs. “If an AI can buy a domain in 10 minutes, imagine what it’ll do next week,” says Jordi.
